When Lothair died unexpectedly, she refused to enter a political marriage with his successor Berengar’s son, a refusal that led to her imprisonment. Her faith deepened in these years, marked by perseverance, prayer, and dependence on God’s providence.

Adelaide eventually escaped through what many historians describe as a providential moment of deliverance and later married Otto I, King of Germany, who became the Holy Roman Emperor. As empress, she is most known for her charitable works, her defense of the Church, her wise counsel to rulers, and her tireless efforts to promote peace throughout Europe. Her life stands as a reminder that holiness can flourish even in courts of political turmoil when one places all trust in the Lord.

A Life of Mercy, Wisdom, and God’s Quiet Miracles

Throughout her long life, Adelaide used her influence to comfort the poor, empower monasteries, and support missionary endeavors. Her royal authority never eclipsed her inner commitment to God’s command to love the least among us. Chronicles describe her as a mother to the poor, a defender of the oppressed, and a steadfast friend of bishops, abbots, and religious communities. She later reconciled with her son and helped raise her grandson, the future Emperor Otto III, guiding him in Christian virtue. Near the end of her life she entered the monastery at Seltz, not as one looking to escape the world, but as a woman prepared to surrender fully to prayer, contemplation, and charity.

She did not suffer martyrdom, but her life bore the martyrdom of perseverance, the daily offering of trials united to Christ. Her death on December 16, 999, marked the close of a century but the beginning of her enduring legacy.
