August 17th – Saint of the Day: Saint Clare of Montefalco

The Mystic with Christ in Her Heart

Saint Clare of Montefalco stands as one of the most profound mystical souls of the Catholic tradition. A 13th-century Italian abbess and Augustinian nun, she is best known for her extraordinary love for the Passion of Christ and the astonishing miracle of the crucifix found within her heart after death. Revered as a mystic, visionary, and spiritual leader, Saint Clare offered herself entirely to God in body, mind, and soul. Her life reveals the beauty of contemplative suffering and a soul transformed into a living sanctuary of Christ. The Church remembers her not only for her mystical experiences but for her wisdom, humility, and enduring witness to the redemptive power of the Cross.

From Noble Roots to a Life of Total Surrender

Clare was born around the year 1268 in Montefalco, a small town in Umbria, Italy, into a noble and devout family. From a young age, she displayed a remarkable piety and desire for solitude and prayer. Her sister Giovanna had established a hermitage just outside Montefalco, and young Clare asked to join. At the tender age of six, she entered the cloistered life. Her commitment deepened over the years, and by the time she was a teenager, Clare had already embraced a life of rigorous penance, silence, and devotion.

Eventually, the small hermitage evolved into a formal monastery of the Rule of Saint Augustine. Clare was chosen as abbess in 1291, a role she held until her death. Her leadership was marked not by sternness but by maternal care and profound wisdom. She led by example, combining asceticism with charity, and was deeply committed to her sisters’ spiritual formation. She is remembered most for her unwavering devotion to the Passion of Christ—so much so that she longed to carry His Cross herself, spiritually and even physically.

Visions, Ecstasies, and the Miraculous Touch of God

Clare’s life was filled with extraordinary mystical experiences. She was often found in deep ecstasies, lost in contemplation of the sufferings of Jesus. Her visions included encounters with Christ, angels, and saints. One of her most famous experiences was a prolonged ecstasy in which she described carrying the Cross of Christ for 28 days. When asked by her sisters where she had been during those days, she simply replied: “I have been at the court of Heaven.”

She was known to receive divine knowledge and guidance for the governance of the community and was even consulted by bishops and civic leaders for her insights. Those around her testified to her spiritual gifts, including the ability to read hearts and comfort souls in turmoil. Clare’s sanctity radiated outward—many sought her counsel, and miraculous healings were reported during her life. In one instance, a man from Foligno was cured of his illness after praying with Clare. Another time, she reportedly multiplied food to feed those in need during a famine.

The Cross Worn Within

Though Clare was not a martyr in the physical sense, her life was one of intense spiritual suffering and trial. Her final years were marked by painful illnesses and interior struggles. Yet she bore everything with joy and submission to the will of God, viewing her sufferings as a participation in Christ’s Passion.

Her bodily mortifications were extreme: she slept on a hard board, wore a hairshirt, and fasted severely, all united to Christ’s redemptive suffering. Despite this, she remained warm-hearted and full of compassion toward her sisters, never permitting her own pain to become a burden to others. This duality—deep mystical union with Christ and practical charity in daily life—makes her a model for all Christians who seek to live both contemplative and active lives.

The Crucified Christ Found in Her Heart

Saint Clare died on August 17, 1308. After her death, the sisters who had cared for her, moved by reverence and wonder, sought to understand more deeply the mysteries she had lived. What they discovered astounded the Church. When her heart was examined—after a spiritual prompting to do so—the sisters found an image of the Crucified Christ formed within her physical heart. The instruments of the Passion—the scourge, the crown of thorns, the nails—were also found in distinct formations, as if imprinted by divine hand. This incredible miracle was attested to by multiple witnesses and confirmed by Church authorities. Pope Clement VIII acknowledged the authenticity of the miracle.

Her body, incorrupt for many years, was venerated by pilgrims who came seeking healing and spiritual consolation. The church of Santa Chiara da Montefalco remains a sacred pilgrimage site to this day, housing her relics and drawing thousands to witness the testimony of a soul who truly became one with Christ.

Let Christ Take Up Dwelling in Your Heart

Saint Clare of Montefalco teaches us that union with Christ is not only possible—it is our calling. Her life encourages us to open our hearts completely to God, allowing Him to imprint His love and sufferings upon our very being. She reminds us that the path to holiness is not through grand gestures alone, but in quiet surrender, hidden sacrifice, and steadfast love.

How can we imitate her today? By embracing the crosses in our own lives without resentment. By deepening our prayer life, especially through meditating on the Passion of Christ. And by practicing spiritual charity—being attentive to the needs and struggles of others, even when we ourselves are hurting.

Saint Clare challenges us to ask: Is my heart a dwelling place for Christ? Do I allow His love and His suffering to transform me from within?

Let us strive to live as she did—with hearts burning for Christ, ready to carry His Cross with love and joy.
