Early Life and Hardships

Maria, the third of seven children, took on significant responsibilities, including caring for her younger siblings and helping with household chores, while her mother worked in the fields to support the family.

A Tragic Encounter

On July 5, 1902, when Maria was just 11 years old, she experienced a horrific attack that would ultimately lead to her sainthood. Alessandro Serenelli, a 20-year-old neighbor, attempted to rape her. Maria resisted, emphasizing that such an act was a mortal sin and would condemn them both. Enraged by her resistance, Alessandro stabbed Maria 14 times. Despite her severe injuries, Maria survived for 24 hours, during which she forgave her attacker and expressed her desire for him to join her in heaven. Her last words were, “I forgive Alessandro Serenelli…and I want him with me in heaven forever”.

Path to Sainthood

Maria Goretti’s story did not end with her tragic death. Her attacker, Alessandro Serenelli, was arrested and sentenced to 30 years in prison. Initially unrepentant, he experienced a profound conversion after Maria appeared to him in a dream, offering him lilies that burned in his hands. This vision led Alessandro to repentance, and upon his release from prison, he sought and received forgiveness from Maria’s mother, Assunta. Alessandro later became a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, dedicating his life to penance and prayer​.

Maria was beatified on April 27, 1947, by Pope Pius XII, and canonized on June 24, 1950. During her canonization, Pope Pius XII referred to her as a “martyr of holy purity” and emphasized her remarkable forgiveness. Her mother, Assunta, was present at the ceremony, marking the first time a parent witnessed their child’s canonization.

Miracles of a Saint

Numerous miracles have been attributed to Saint Maria Goretti both during her life and after her death. One of the first miracles leading to her beatification involved the healing of a young boy, Mariano Filippetti, who was dying of meningitis. After his mother prayed for Maria’s intercession, Mariano recovered completely​.

Another significant miracle occurred when a woman named Ersilia Ponzio was healed from a severe and incurable ailment after praying to Maria Goretti. These and other miracles were rigorously investigated by the Church and played a crucial role in her canonization process .
