February 20th – Saint of the Day: Saint Wulfric of Haselbury

The Hermit Who Became a Heavenly Counselor

Saint Wulfric of Haselbury is one of the most fascinating yet lesser-known saints in Christian history. His life is a powerful testament to how God can transform even the most worldly individuals into vessels of divine grace. Born into a life of comfort and indulgence, Wulfric initially sought pleasure in hunting, socializing, and the privileges of his priestly status. However, an unexpected encounter with a beggar changed everything, igniting a radical conversion that led him to embrace a life of deep solitude, penance, and unwavering service to God. He went on to become a revered hermit, a trusted counselor to kings, and a worker of miracles whose influence extended far beyond his humble cell.

His life is a call to reexamine our own priorities. How often do we find ourselves distracted by the comforts of the world, neglecting our deeper purpose? Saint Wulfric’s story invites us to step away from distractions and cultivate a life of prayer, service, and contemplation. Through his intercession, we can seek the grace to abandon worldly attachments and draw closer to God’s perfect plan for us.

From a Worldly Priest to a Saint

Saint Wulfric was born around 1080 in Compton Martin, a small village in Somerset, England. He came from a respected family and was ordained as a priest at an early age. However, unlike the saints who were pious from childhood, Wulfric initially lived a life of ease and enjoyment. As a priest in Deverill, near Warminster, he spent more time engaging in hunting and social activities than in ministering to his flock. His love for pleasure often overshadowed his priestly duties, making him a man of the world rather than a man of God.

But God had other plans for Wulfric. One day, a poor beggar approached him, and something within him changed. This encounter struck him deeply, leading him to question his lifestyle and his purpose. Soon after, he began to withdraw from worldly distractions, dedicating himself more fervently to prayer and acts of penance.

In 1125, Wulfric made a radical decision: he left his comfortable life and moved into a small cell attached to the Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Haselbury Plucknett. There, he took up the life of a hermit, practicing extreme asceticism, wearing a hair shirt and chainmail, and enduring harsh self-imposed penances. Though his new life was marked by solitude, people soon began to seek him out, drawn by his wisdom, holiness, and gift of prophecy. Even King Henry I and King Stephen sought his counsel, recognizing the divine wisdom in his words.

A Living Miracle

Saint Wulfric’s holiness was evident not only in his words but also in the miracles that surrounded his life. His gift of prophecy was one of the most extraordinary aspects of his spiritual journey. He correctly predicted the death of King Henry I and the political turmoil that would follow. His ability to foresee future events made him a trusted advisor to rulers and commoners alike.

But beyond prophecy, Wulfric was known for his miraculous healings. Many sick and suffering individuals came to him, and through his prayers, they found relief and healing. People witnessed physical ailments disappearing and impossible situations turning around through his intercession.

His hermitage became a sanctuary of divine power, a place where the sick, the troubled, and the hopeless found solace. Though he lived in solitude, his influence stretched far and wide, and his prayers reached the ears of the Almighty. His miracles were not just acts of divine intervention; they were signs of God’s closeness to those who truly seek Him.

A Saint’s Struggle

Though Wulfric did not face martyrdom, his life was far from easy. His ascetic lifestyle brought immense physical suffering—his body bore the marks of self-imposed penance as he sought purification through discipline. He frequently fasted, endured freezing cold baths, and wore uncomfortable garments designed to remind him of Christ’s suffering.

Beyond the physical hardships, Wulfric also faced spiritual trials. He was sometimes ridiculed for his extreme devotion, and many questioned his choices. Some saw his withdrawal from the world as escapism rather than true holiness. However, he remained steadfast, finding strength in his unwavering love for Christ.

Despite these trials, he embraced suffering as a path to sanctification. His hardships did not break him; instead, they refined him. His life reminds us that suffering, when united with Christ, becomes a means of grace rather than despair.

A Saint’s Legacy

After Saint Wulfric’s passing on February 20, 1154, the miracles did not cease. Almost immediately, stories of miraculous healings began to spread from those who visited his tomb in Haselbury Plucknett. Pilgrims would travel to pray at his resting place, and many testified to experiencing divine intervention through his intercession.

His reputation as a miracle worker continued to grow, and devotion to him remained strong throughout the centuries. Even today, his life inspires many to turn away from worldly distractions and pursue a deeper spiritual life.

Living the Lesson

Saint Wulfric’s journey is a powerful reminder that no one is beyond transformation. He was not born a saint; he became one through his willingness to surrender his former life and seek God with all his heart. His story invites us to reflect on our own lives—where are we seeking comfort over holiness? Where are we hesitant to fully trust in God’s plan?

We may not all be called to live as hermits, but we are all called to create space for God in our lives. We can take small steps toward holiness by dedicating more time to prayer, practicing self-discipline, and seeking moments of solitude to hear God’s voice. His life teaches us that it is never too late to change and that God is always ready to welcome us into a deeper relationship with Him.

May we, like Saint Wulfric, have the courage to leave behind what holds us back and embrace a life rooted in faith. May his prayers guide us in our own journeys of transformation and grace.
