Angela went to live with her uncle in the nearby town of Salò, where her grief led her to seek solace in God.

This loss deeply troubled Angela, but through fervent prayer, she experienced a vision of her sister in heaven surrounded by angels. Angela joined the Third Order of St. Francis, embracing a life of prayer, humility, and service. Her devotion to God and her keen awareness of the social issues of her time inspired her to address the lack of education for young girls. In 1535, Angela founded the Company of St. Ursula in Brescia, Italy. This groundbreaking organization focused on providing religious education to girls, equipping them to be faithful wives, mothers, and community leaders. Unlike traditional religious orders, the Ursulines lived and worked in the world, emphasizing the importance of integrating faith into daily life.

A Faith That Healed and Inspired

While Angela Merici’s life was marked more by spiritual influence than miraculous events, one significant miracle occurred during her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1524, while traveling, Angela temporarily lost her sight on the island of Crete. Despite her blindness, she continued her journey, relying on her deep faith and trust in God. Upon her return to the same location, she was miraculously healed while praying before a crucifix. This event profoundly strengthened her faith and confirmed her conviction that God was guiding her mission.

Angela’s spiritual wisdom and leadership were themselves a form of miracle. She inspired others to embrace a life of virtue, humility, and service. Angela was beatified in 1768 by Pope Clement XIII and canonized in 1807 by Pope Pius VII. Her legacy endures through the Ursuline Order, which continues to educate and empower young women around the world.
