January 6th – Saint of the Day: Saint André Bessette

A Beacon of Faith and Healing

Saint André Bessette, known as Brother André, is celebrated as one of the most beloved figures in Catholic history. This unassuming lay brother of the Congregation of Holy Cross is remembered not for grand theological treatises or high-ranking positions but for his unwavering faith, humility, and extraordinary devotion to Saint Joseph. His miraculous healing ministry brought physical and spiritual comfort to thousands, earning him the affectionate title, “The Miracle Man of Montreal.” Through his trust in divine providence, Brother André founded Saint Joseph’s Oratory, one of the most significant pilgrimage sites in the world, where millions continue to find hope and healing. Canonized by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, Saint André Bessette’s legacy remains a powerful testimony to the transformative power of faith and simplicity.

Rooted in Humility

Born Alfred Bessette on August 9, 1845, in the rural village of Mont-Saint-Grégoire, Quebec, Alfred was the eighth of twelve children in a devout yet impoverished family. Life was marked by hardship from the start. His father, a lumberjack, died in a tragic accident when Alfred was only nine years old. Three years later, his mother succumbed to tuberculosis, leaving the young boy an orphan. Weak and often in ill health, Alfred’s early years were spent moving between relatives and working various jobs to support himself.

Despite the challenges, Alfred’s faith never wavered. He developed a deep devotion to Saint Joseph, whom he saw as a protector and provider. At age 25, inspired by his love for God, he sought to join the Congregation of Holy Cross in Montreal. Initially rejected due to his frail health and lack of formal education, Alfred persevered, supported by the encouragement of his parish priest. He was eventually accepted into the congregation and took the name Brother André. Assigned to the humble role of porter at Notre Dame College, Brother André’s profound faith would soon shine through his modest duties.

The Miracle Man of Montreal

Brother André’s deep devotion to Saint Joseph and his faith in God’s healing power became widely known as he served as porter. It was in this simple role that he began ministering to those who were sick, anxious, or troubled. He would anoint the sick with oil from a lamp burning before a statue of Saint Joseph, praying fervently for their healing. Countless people reported miraculous recoveries—physical ailments cured, spiritual burdens lifted, and even life-threatening illnesses reversed.

The fame of Brother André’s healing touch spread far and wide. Throngs of people came to him daily, seeking his prayers and intercession. Despite the overwhelming attention, Brother André remained humble, consistently attributing the miracles to Saint Joseph and saying, “It is not I who heals, but Saint Joseph. I am only his little dog.” His humility and compassion made him beloved by all, and his deep faith inspired countless conversions and spiritual renewals.

Endurance Through Trials

Brother André’s life was not without difficulties. As his reputation as a healer grew, so did skepticism and criticism. Some Church authorities questioned the legitimacy of the healings attributed to him, while others doubted his simplicity and unassuming nature. Additionally, his efforts to build a shrine to Saint Joseph on Mount Royal in Montreal met with resistance, including financial constraints and opposition from skeptics who doubted the necessity of such a project.

Despite these challenges, Brother André’s faith never faltered. When financial difficulties threatened to halt construction of the shrine, he placed a small statue of Saint Joseph on the mountain and declared, “Saint Joseph will find the means to build his church.” His perseverance bore fruit, and the shrine grew into the magnificent Saint Joseph’s Oratory, which stands today as a testament to faith and determination.

The Legacy of Healing

When Brother André passed away on January 6, 1937, at the age of 91, over a million people attended his funeral, demonstrating the profound impact he had on the lives of so many. After his death, devotion to him only grew, as reports of miracles and answered prayers attributed to his intercession multiplied. From physical healings to moments of spiritual consolation, countless testimonies continue to affirm his role as a powerful intercessor.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory, the crowning achievement of Brother André’s life, remains a place of pilgrimage, drawing millions of visitors annually. Pilgrims come to pray, seek healing, and honor the man who so profoundly trusted in Saint Joseph’s care. Canonized in 2010, Saint André Bessette is celebrated as a model of humility and faith, reminding us that great things can be accomplished through trust in God and devotion to His saints.
