Her father, Clement di Rosa, was a successful industrialist, and her mother, Countess Camilla Albani, instilled in her children a deep sense of faith and responsibility. Paola received an excellent education from the Visitandine nuns, who nurtured her intellect and spiritual devotion.

Tragedy struck when Paola was only 17; her beloved mother passed away, leaving her to take over the management of the family household. Despite her youth, she demonstrated remarkable strength and maturity, taking on the responsibility of caring for her siblings and supporting her father. It was during this time that her spirituality deepened, and she began to devote herself more fully to serving others.

Paola’s turning point came when she became involved in her father’s spinning mill. She wasn’t content with simply overseeing the operations; she also took a personal interest in the well-being of the young female workers. She offered them catechism lessons, moral guidance, and a compassionate ear. This early experience of combining faith with practical service planted the seeds for her future vocation.

A Life of Miracles and Service

Saint Mary di Rosa’s life was marked by extraordinary acts of love and courage. One of her most notable qualities was her fearless willingness to face danger for the sake of others. During the cholera epidemic that swept through Brescia, she risked her life to care for the afflicted, often stepping into situations where others feared to tread. Her compassion for the sick and her tireless efforts to alleviate their suffering became a hallmark of her ministry.

One of the most famous events in her life occurred during a time of political unrest. Confronted by a group of soldiers, Mary di Rosa held up a crucifix and rebuked them with such authority and conviction that they abandoned their aggressive intentions. This act of courage became legendary and symbolized her deep trust in divine protection.

Saint Mary di Rosa also demonstrated a keen ability to innovate in her service to others. She founded the Handmaids of Charity in 1840, a religious congregation dedicated to the care of the sick, particularly those abandoned by society. Mary di Rosa’s health deteriorated in her later years due to the physical and emotional toll of her work. Yet even in her suffering, she continued to inspire those around her with her unwavering dedication to God’s will.

Miracles After Death

After her death on December 15, 1855, at the age of 42, Saint Mary di Rosa’s reputation for holiness continued to grow. Numerous miracles were attributed to her intercession, particularly healings of the sick and divine interventions for those in desperate situations. Her tomb in Brescia became a site of pilgrimage, drawing countless faithful who sought her help and guidance.

Among the miracles credited to her intercession were cases of incurable diseases that were suddenly healed after prayers to her. These miracles played a significant role in her beatification on May 26, 1940, and her eventual canonization on June 12, 1954.

Today, the Handmaids of Charity continue her legacy, serving the sick and poor around the world. The congregation remains a living testament to her vision and dedication.
