A Beacon of Hope and Healing in Wisconsin
Nestled in the tranquil farmlands of Champion, Wisconsin, stands the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help, a place of profound faith, healing, and miracles. This shrine is the site of the only Church-approved Marian apparition in the United States, a testament to the divine presence in everyday life.
The Apparition and the Miracle
The story dates back to 1859 when a young Belgian immigrant named Adele Brise experienced a series of visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. While carrying a sack of wheat to the local gristmill, Adele saw a beautiful woman clothed in dazzling white with a yellow sash around her waist and a crown of twelve stars around her head. The lady stood between two trees, a maple, and a hemlock.
In the third and final apparition, on October 9, 1859, the Lady spoke to Adele, identifying herself as “the Queen of Heaven who prays for the conversion of sinners.” She instructed Adele to “gather the children in this wild country and teach them what they should know for salvation.” This divine directive led Adele to dedicate her life to teaching the Catholic faith to children, traveling by foot to remote areas to fulfill this mission.
The miracles associated with Our Lady of Good Help are numerous, but one of the most extraordinary events occurred in 1871 during the Great Peshtigo Fire, the deadliest fire in U.S. history. As flames engulfed the region, Adele, her fellow sisters, and terrified locals sought refuge at the chapel grounds. They prayed fervently, carrying a statue of Mary in procession. Miraculously, although the fire consumed everything around them, the chapel and the surrounding five acres of land remained untouched. This event solidified the site’s significance as a place of divine protection and intercession.
